The Carleton Place Canoe Club offers winter training programs for athletes looking to take the next step in their sprint canoe/kayak journey. Our winter programs are designed to help athletes develop specific strength and fitness elements that contribute to on water success in our sport. Winter training is extremely important for athlete development, especially for athletes hoping to progress to the provincial, national, and international levels. It is also a great way to stay strong, fit, and healthy in a fun and knowledgeable environment.
Our 2023-2024 winter programs will begin on Monday, November 6th, 2023 and will continue until Saturday, April 27th, 2024. The club will be closed for Christmas from December 23rd – January 2nd, however athletes will be provided a program to complete at home during this time. The club may also be closed for 1-week in March for the March Break (March 10th-17th, 2024) while some athletes and coaches are participating in the provincial team winter and spring training camps. Athletes at home will be provided with a program to complete during this time.
Below are the details for winter training programs the CPCC is offering in 2023-2024.
PART-TIME STRENGTH & FITNESS DEVELOPMENT (up to 3 sessions/week)
Great for multi-sport athletes who need a flexible schedule and want to improve their functional strength and fitness, or for those looking for a lesser time-commitment to training and staying active/fit through a structured program. Sessions will take place at 6:00am or 2:45pm on weekdays, with Saturday mornings optional.

Training Approach: Training sessions will utilize a well-rounded approach to achieve these goals, incorporating various activities such as circuit training, swimming, running, yoga and functional and dynamic strength training.

PROGRAM DATES: November 6th, 2023 - April 27th, 2024
AGE GROUP: Born 2011 or earlier
COMMITMENT: up to 3 sessions per week
JUNIOR ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT (up to 5 sessions/week)
Great for U13/U14 athletes looking to take the next step in their canoe/kayak journey. This program is intended to be for athletes who would like to learn more about how to train for performance at a provincial, and eventually, national level. Goal setting sessions will be held for all athletes in this program. This program is also a great cross training opportunity for athletes looking to improve functional strength and fitness for other sports. Training sessions will take place at 6:00am or 2:45pm and Saturday mornings.

HIGH PERFORMANCE
For athletes committed to training for performance at a provincial, national, and international level. Athletes in this program are expected to attend practice and work with a purpose. Goal setting sessions will be held with all athletes in this program to determine individual needs and plan for performance. Training sessions will take place at 6:00am or 2:45pm and Saturday mornings.
The program incorporates a variety of training activities to target specific and non-specific endurance, speed, and strength development. These activities include weightlifting, circuit training, canoe/kayak ergometer, running, swimming, XC skiing, and stretching/yoga. This diversity helps athletes develop a well-rounded skill set and a sustainable fitness level.
The program goes beyond physical training and includes components such as sport nutrition, goal setting, and sport psychology information sessions. These elements are vital for holistic athlete development and mental preparedness.
Athletes will follow a detailed yearly training plan (YTP). This indicates a structured, periodized approach to training, allowing for progressive improvement and peak performance during specific competition seasons.
Overall, this program combines a high training frequency, sport-specific training activities, and a focus on mental and nutritional aspects to provide athletes with a comprehensive and competitive training experience.

AGE GROUP: Born 2009 or earlier
COMMITMENT: 7-10 training sessions per week
ADULT WINTER TRAINING
For our Masters paddlers, or adult canoe/kayak enthusiasts, this program is great for those looking for a fun training environment to work on sport specific strength training and technical development using our canoe/kayak ergometers. Training sessions will take place on Tuesday/Thursday evenings and will be focused on weightlifting for health & fitness, and ergometer training for technical learning and aerobic system development.
Adult winter training participants will also be able to join the CPCC coaches and HP/JHP athletes for Saturday morning XC skiing sessions throughout the winter months.
PROGRAM FEE: $250 (2-3 sessions per week) or $175 (1 session per week)
PROGRAM DATES: November 6th, 2023 - April 27th, 2024
AGE GROUP: 25+
COMMITMENT: 1-3 training sessions per week (select number of sessions at registration)
