Basic Membership

Basic Membership is a new initiative at the Carleton Place Canoe Club that began in 2019. The intent is to get more of our community out on the water and experiencing the waterway we are so lucky to have running through the heart of our town. Whether you are an ex-paddler looking to get back out on the water, or a recreational user wanting to go at your own pace, this basic membership provides flexibility in the use of our club equipment and facilities.

Basic members will be able to access the club and skill-appropriate club equipment during designated member hours (outlined below). It is important to note that there will be no programming, coaching, or instruction during these hours. Members will simply be able to sign out equipment approved by our dock supervisor, and use the equipment within the designated areas.

A ‘basic member’ of the Carleton Place Canoe Club can be defined as any individual registered in a U12 or older full summer season program with the club. This includes:

  • Sprint programs; U12, U14, U16+, and Adult Canoe Kayak
  • Basic Membership
  • Lifetime Members

Outside of scheduled program structured practices, basic members can access the Carleton Place Canoe Club equipment and docks during our ‘open membership hours’, which are as follows for the 2021 season:

  • Wednesday from 5:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Friday from 5:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Saturday from 12:00pm – 5:00pm, and
  • Sunday from 9:00am – 3:00pm

Age Restrictions

  • The minimum age for Basic Member registration is U14 (born 2008 or earlier)
  • Members U14 and U12 (born 2007-2010) are only permitted to paddle with direct adult supervision, however U14 (born 2006-2007) participants can complete a skills assessment to gain permission to paddle without a parent/guardian on the water
  • Skills assessment will include carrying and loading boat into the water, paddling to 500m docks and back without tipping, demonstrating tip-turn-tow, and unloading their boat from the water, all without assistance
  • If a U14 participant has passed the skills assessment, a parent/guardian still needs to be on the shoreline to supervise their paddler

Supervisor Rules

For participants U12 and U14, the supervising adult must also be in a program or be registered as a Basic Member (unless skills assessment has been passed). The supervising adult must meet all the following requirements:

  • Be the parent/guardian of the participant being supervised, or be a designated supervisor by the parent/guardian of the participant being supervised (this must be submitted to the CPCC office in writing via info@cpcanoeclub.com)
  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Be on the water with the participant being supervised at all times (unless skills assessment has been passed)
  • May not be responsible to supervise more than 2 participants at a time

Due to limitations in gathering sizes, all attendance to basic member hours must be booked online using our Sign-Up Genius account (accessed through www.cpcanoeclub.com). Arrival time bookings will be limited to 8 for the first half of basic member hours, and 8 for the second half. Booking is to monitor arrival times only, not departure times.
